Watson’s Bay.

The ferry fare to here was cheaper than the two beers we had at the ‘cheap’ place! We had expected to be here for the entire day as the Lonely Planet Guide had said it was not to be missed and how it was part of a national park and the walks etc. Etc.  Well, we did all of what they suggested and it took about an hour and a half max; and we weren’t rushing. We even stopped to chat to a Police Rescue guy (anybody else remember that tv programme?) for a while, who didn’t seem to know much about geography or which sea we were looking at until he Google it! We think the Lonely Planet should update itself.

So far we’ve not found anywhere that sells a beer for less than around £6. It’s usually around the £8 or £9 mark for a small beer. That’s in Sydney in general not just Watson’s Bay. However, in Hong Kong  it was £10!  Food is expensive here too. We had a burger, a wrap and two soft drinks which together cost £21. Which is about average  not that we are complaining,  but just something you should budget for if you decide to come😊.

So, back to WB. A very nice place, but lacking in bars and eateries…..and walks. OK if you want to spend all day on the beach, but in 30 deg like today, with no shade? Not for us.

We stayed at the bar for a while as the beer was cold and served in iced glasses and we sat outside. Which proved a bit dangerous at times! One guy with a pick up drove past us on the pavement and said “this looks good”, promptly drove into an empty parking space to be pounced on by the conceirge of the hotel next door asking if he was staying at the hotel. He was.  About ten minutes later another guy did the same thing in a beat up old car, coming so close I had to shout to make him aware we were there! Believe me,  he missed us by an inch and no more. He too was asked the same question but obviously wasn’t staying at the hotel and was promptly asked to leave. Such was our excitement for the day.

While queuing for the ferry back we met two young girls from Shropshire on a tour of Oz and NZ. So we passed the waiting time with chit chat and the meaning of life etc! Lol. Speaking of which, while getting our beers, a local asked the guy behind the bar why ” those guys in Malaysia  got arrested for wearing their budgie smugglers”…..Richard just had to ask the question……….why do you call them budgie smugglers? She looked embarrassed and asked if she really had to explain…..If you know Richard,  then you know he had to have an explanation! It’s  because, she said tentatively, that’s where you men keep your……she whispered. …..your, budgies of course! Everyone rolled about, then Richard said, ok I’m just taking my budgie outside……guess you had to be there  😂😂

Back in the apartment now with some beer and wine and cooling off under the air con…..aahhhhhh, lovely.  We’ve been looking to buy some road maps here for the rest of our trip, nothing. Even Google  only found two real map shops in the whole of Sydney.  So, I messaged our nice host to ask him where we might buy one. He then asked where we were off to and we heard no more. Planning to spend tomorrow hunting, we had a knock on the door of the apartment from our super host with a road atlas which he’d bought for us. And he wouldn’t accept any money for it. He was going to give us a refund on our apartment because the lift wasn’t working and we wouldn’t let him. Not that walking up 7 flights of stairs at the end of the day hasn’t been tough though. So, he said he’d buy the maps for us instead. Top chap!
